THE ERIE COUNTY INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY TODAY APPROVED OVER $5 MILLION IN AID TO ASSIST MAJOR PROJECTS IN DOWNTOWN BUFFALO AND DEPEW

Buffalo, NY - The Erie County Industrial Development Agency today approved more than $5 million in incentives to aid two major projects totaling $38.1 million in local investment.

Uniland Development Company will receive $4.92 million in sales, mortgage recording and property tax breaks to construct a new $32.6 million headquarters and training center for Catholic Health, Inc. on a blighted site at the north end of Buffalo's Elm/Oak arterial, a key gateway to the city.

The six-story, 140,000-square-foot medical facility will house Catholic Health's administrative offices and regional training center.  The project also includes construction of a 197,000-square-foot parking garage to accommodate up to 700 vehicles.

The new center, which will boost Catholic Heath's staff from 601 to 652 in its first two years of operation, will also centralize the nonprofit health provider's staff, from multiple locations, bringing 700 additional workers to Buffalo's Central Business District.

The 20,000-square-foot training center is expected to provide training, skills certification and recertification to as many as 15,000 of the region's healthcare workforce, annually. The center's proximity to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Catholic Health's numerous hospitals and clinics, is expected to streamline hiring of high-skilled medical employees for all of the area's major medical providers.

The ECIDA also approved $148,000 in sales tax abatements for Harper International Corporation to retrofit 150,000-square-foot of the former Quebecor facility on George Urban Boulevard in Depew.

Harper, which builds and services thermal processing systems, such as high-tech furnaces and carbon fiber production lines, will spend $5.5 million to create new research and development space and high-bay manufacturing space. The project will also include reroofing of the its leased space and purchase of $1 million in manufacturing and non-manufacturing equipment.

Harper is relocating from 70,000 square feet of leased space in the Town of Lancaster and will create 16 new jobs which will pay between $50,000 and $100,000 per year.

The ECIDA board also approved supplemental changes to its 2013 budget, including $34,000 in previously discussed salary increases and $140,000 to cover a rise in liability insurance premiums.
